12th October: Penguin Ventures Stand at BLE 2018

The New Fat design and build team are all back in the office after setting up the latest exhibition stand for Penguin Ventures (part of Penguin Random House) at Brand Licensing Europe, Olympia, London. It’s the 5th year in a row that we’ve had the privilege of producing the stand for the big event. The whole team love working with Penguin Venture, who manage a portfolio of such well-known children’s book brands.

Thomas Merrington, Creative Director of Penguin Ventures had this to say:

“I cannot stress just how amazing the team at The New Fat are. We have been using them for some years and have the whole process down to a fine art. Whilst stand builds can be stressful, The New Fat team make the whole process effortless – from planning to build to take down, the BLE stand experience couldn’t be better.”

26th July: Medilink Innovation Day and Awards

We were recently given the opportunity to design all the corporate material for the Medilink East Midlands Innovation Day and Awards Ceremony. This involved design and production of both the day and evening event brochures, the award certificates and the winners medal logos. We even had the opportunity to go along to the event ourselves. With us we took, lots of great examples of design work, loads of cakes (some would say too many!) and of course our Spin to Win Wheel! All in all the design work and the event were a great success:

“I’ve really enjoyed working with you both and the team on the material for Innovation Day and our Business Awards. All the pre-work went exceptionally well, none of you made me feel harassed by the deadlines for print it felt lovely and calm. The design is the best yet, really eye-catching and fresh for the day and the evening had the sparkly I was looking for. Thank you for your commitment and hard-work.”

It was great to work with Medilink East Midlands again this year and it was brilliant to meet so many lovely people at the event itself…thanks for having us!

25th August: Ashleigh’s Work Experience

It’s been great having Ashleigh in the office this week. Here’s what she had to say about her week at The New Fat:

I’ve had a great week at The New Fat and the whole team have welcomed me and made me feel so comfortable.

I’ve had a great insight into the industry and how a design team works efficiently and effectively on daily tasks.

I’ve learnt a lot from the team – from how they deal with clients, to how they manage their time when working on a variety of briefs at once – along with help on my own designs and furthering my software skills.

After working to a client’s brief this week, I feel a lot more confident in my own work and feel that now I have a better knowledge and understanding moving forward into my final year of studying Graphic Design.

27th March: Exhibition showcase: Solvay JEC 2017

We have been working closely again with Solvay on one of their biggest annual exhibitions – JEC World 2017 International Composites Event in Paris. Solvay are one of the key players in the composite industry and JEC is one of the World’s largest composite exhibitions, so impact is key to this project, as is brand consistency. The large 20m x 12m stand featured large wall graphics, graphic towers with video screens, a bar, seating area, suspended graphics as well as multiple meeting rooms.

To encourage people to the stand and promote the location there was various printed and digital elements: an e-signature graphic, 3 different event invites, a magazine advert, a scrolling advert panel (to be displayed outside the event), exhibit cards for products on display and branded directional footprints leading the way around the Hall to the stand.

On a project this size it is important to incorporate new inspiring design ensuring consistency with the brand. We work on numerous projects throughout the year and although familiar with their guidelines our designers never fail to offer something new to a project.

At the beginning of the project we received the brief from the client as well as a proposed stand layout from Solvay’s designated stand builders and set about creating a visually impacting design that was attractive and eye catching yet clean and elegant at the same time. Using a neon swoosh throughout the project that has movement and fast pace connotations to it, much like the industries Solvay operate in, the difficult task was making sure that the bright neon effects you see on screen could actually be replicated in real life on the printed elements. By liaising with the Stand builders we were able to come up with a solution to make sure this happened. We then took this design and used it across the accompanying printed and digital materials.

We worked closely with the stand builders, as the layout of the stand evolved and changed and once the stand graphics were signed off we thoroughly checked everything before preparing final files to make sure there were no issues. All of this was undertaken with tight lead-times, which was no problem for our team of experienced designers!

The show was a huge success with many people impressed with the stand, Solvay themselves had this to say…

“At Solvay we have a very large portfolio of products to promote – therefore finding a graphic style that looks good yet enables us to clearly promote our products and target markets is key. The style adopted for JEC did just that.  The printed graphic quality was amazing – giving the feeling that all those neon lines were actually lit.  We received extremely positive feedback for our stand look and feel both internally and externally. So thanks to The New Fat.”

19th January: Manufacturer marketing showcase: Karrimor Product Catalogue

Phew! As a designer you get pretty used to quick turnaround design jobs. We thought we would share one of our favourites which comes in twice a year, every year (for the past 14 years).

This lovely Karrimor catalogue allow retailers to select footwear and rucksack stock for the forthcoming season. Our job is to design and produce an attractive document with easy to read product details, true to life product photos, as well as keeping the Karrimor style strong, creative and on brand.

At the beginning of the job we have a large delivery of shoes, boots and rucksacks all crammed into our offices. We photograph, photo retouch and prepare everything for the design stage. Choosing front cover images is always key and so we shoot a lot of possible options at the photoshoot stage.

Design wise, we keep to a successful format – clean, simple, with the product image and name being the focus.

Once the job is ready to go, The New Fat team check everything with our hawk eyes to make sure everything is perfect before going to production. Organising print production and delivery ourselves means we have full control over the project from the moment the samples arrive to the delivery of the finished item.

The whole design and print process is undertaken in a small timeframe and with our tried and tested design procedure we have no trouble meeting our clients expectations.
